Bear Activity in the Park

We have a bear visiting the park regularly. We believe it is the same bear each time. He has gotten into 2 cars and 2 RVs. The bear was scared off from one of the RVs, but he did break in to the other. He created minor damage to both RVs.

We will be calling the conservation officer this week to report the activity, though we do not know if the conservation officer will take any action.

It is important to ensure that anything that might be construed as food be secured inside. The bear has been rewarded by breaking in, so we know he will come back and keep trying. He is curious and just likes to look around even when there is nothing to find or smell. However, he has been attracted by something as innocuous as spice packets or dry parmesan cheese.

Do not leave food or garbage in your car. Lock your car doors.

Ensure there is no food or garbage outside your RV.

Always check to make sure you have locked the garbage and compost containers properly after you have used them.

We do not expect this activity to last too much longer. Once the first frost comes and/or the park ceases to reward the bear, we hope the bear will move on.

If you are walking outside when it is dark (and you do not have a dog), use a headlamp or flashlight and stay aware. Do not hesitate to use a bear horn if you see the bear. It is better to alert people in the park that the bear is around. Let’s do what we can to make the park unattractive to this bear.
